I added a "9.2" to the layout, modeler, and hub icons so I can differentiate between LW9 and LW9.2 on the dock.

open these in preview, cmd-c to copy. select the lightwave file to change, cmd-i to get info. select the small icon on the panel that opens and cmd-v to paste. sometimes it works, sometimes you need to click and cmd-v a few times.

OK, don't mean to hijack the thread but I thought I'd give the 9.2 icons a whirl... Dana had a great idea! Here are all three for Layout, Modeler, and Hub. These are 256x256 png files. Feel free to use away if you want...

Cool; I use 9.2, 9.3 UB, and 9.3 PPC and so different icons would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Ooo could you make a version with (beta) on it or something, because we use beta versions a lot but always have official versions installed and in the dock just incase. Either way, these are pretty neat, great idea!

Thanks all... I don't think I'm going to be making any 9.x.x versions, but I put together some 9.3 beta versions for your docking pleasure...

cheers!

Since I don't quite like mac icons to fill the whole 128x128 square, some time ago I made my own set of transparent icons out of the classic lw logo which I simply masked out and colorized.

The logo came from some jpeg in the net so there are a few compression artifacts, but not too noticeable. I you don't like square icons you might like these.

Miguel

Here's a preview of the ones I'm making and they have masks as well :help: :help:

Anyway, they look so good to me that I'm thinking of making T-shirts out of them. Chuck, Jay....what do you say :hey:

Hi guys,

You know, it's quite easy to create icons in LightWave, with an awesome alpha mask.

So where's the 3D icon love?

^I hear you but to be honest not every design task is best served with a 3d application...

Now that's not to say someone can't create a great icon in LW too though! ;)

Some of the original MacOSX icons were done in LightWave.

(Edit: Or so I was told by another LightWave user at the last MacWorld.)

Cool info Chilton....if it's real that is

I actually used LW to make icons before...these were made a few years ago.

Just basic stuff really, but so much fun :D

The validity of things I'm told is always suspect, which is why I qualified my note there  .

However, I have worked with at least two artists who did icons for Copland and Windows XP. They did their icons by hand--no surprise there. At the last MacWorld, I met artists who did both icons and animations for Vista. All of them used 3D apps of some sort, though in some cases only for mock-ups.

I know that at least a few of the original icons for OSX were done in 3D apps, because I remember seeing the wireframes in a design book. I just didn't know which 3D app.

The absolute, most gorgeous icon I have ever seen for an app is for an upcoming app from a friend of mine, and I know he used a 3D app for the base, and went to town on it in PhotoShop.

So while I'm not 100% certain that the icons in MacOSX were originally done in LightWave (and won't be until I meet the people who did them), I feel certain that you could use LightWave to make some really awesome icons.

Chilton, do you have any links or pics for that up coming app :)

I always liked the LW icon, it's as cool as the Apple logo and I'm surprised there is only one t-shirt design of it out there :help:
