I've been using LW primarily on my desktop which is a dual 2.7ghz g5 with 2g ram and an ati x800 card and have been fairly happy with this setup. Only thing is that for one of my projects I'm working with really high poly objects in modeler and things are slowed down to a crawl when I work on this. So I'm thinking of upgrading soon so I can improve the real time 3d feedback while working in modeler... I'm not so concerned about rendering speed.

So my question is, if I get the new 8core 3ghz mac pro with 4g ram and the ati x1900 card, will I see a pretty significant step up in performance when working in modeler? Anybody who has this type of setup, what is the highest poly object you can work with in modeler before it slows down drastically?? Please help because if the new setup will be a significant improvement then I need to put in my order soon.

I haven't run any tests in Modeler yet, but you sure will see massive improvements in render speed in Layout. I just went from a Power Mac Dual Processor 2GHz G5 (first rev.) to the 8-core 3GHz Mac Pro, 5GB, ATI X1900 XT and I was blown away.

We've been running some benchmarks over in the Open Beta forum (since LWUB is still in Open Beta) which is open to all LW9 users to register for. Come on in and join the paartay... :bday:

Modeler in 9.2 is getting a significant speed-up of OpenGL anyway, just like the hot-rod that Layout got with 9.0

Is the released version of 9.2 UB?

I've got an 8 core - About how much faster is the UB version going to be?

You can join the Open Beta and give it a spin.

Considering that the non-UB does not run on Intel processors natively and has to be emulated, the UB will run MUCH faster.
