View Full Version : Flexible metal hose rig?

I know that the answer is probably absurdly simple, but until now I've done little else than arch-viz and "rigid" type stuff. So:

I have a steel hose that needs to be flexible. What is the simplest way to rig it so that I can keyframe the position of the ends as needed throughout the animation, and have the middle section of the hose bend also?

Am I going to have to use weight maps and a full IK skeleton here with dynamics, or is it really not that hard?

you could probably just rig it with a chain of bones set to IK. then if u need the hose to bend a certain way in the center (or at a specific spot on the chain) use multiple goals. hope that helps.

Create two weight maps, for two bones, one at either end, add a selection set which consists of the two ends and then use that as a Fix in clothFX. I would usually use a proxy quad poly string and parent the hose it it, using metalink. Key the bones and there you are.
