View Full Version : How do you make an EXPLOSION?!?

I have looked every where and read lots of tutorials on how to make a realistic explosion, but none of them have ever actually helped me! They either don't look at all like explosions, or don't work. I found one that I thought would be "the one", and it looked incredible about half way through making it, but when animated, it just looked like a spinning shape! Can any one give me any advice?

There was a DVD on Sharbor about this, fire, smoke trails ect....

I was going to buy it when I finish the ones I have.

Depends on the kind of explosion. Realistic? Hollywood "Big Cans of Gasoline" fireball? Mushroom cloud? Airburst? Zero-G with/without burning atmosphere? Primary, secondary or both?

...you had me at "big cans of gasoline..."...

If it doesn't -really- have to be 3D, then the fastest bestest explosions, and a LOT of other really cool particle effects, are had with Particle Illusions. This is 2D though, so you can't fly through them. But way convincing otherwise.

I thinking of the kind of explosion that comes from a vehicle being destroyed, or a grenade explosion. The image that comes to mind is like the explosions from Ghost Recon Adv Warfighter 2! They are incredibly impressive for a video game!
This is the best image I can find: http://www.stampede-entertainment.com/postcards/tremors3/explosion-l.jpg

Ah. "Hollywood Gasoline Can Explosion" - you'd be well off with a copy of Pyromania Pro, which I understand is fairly inexpensive these days. Failing that, a copy of Dynamite in Grid Mode rather than Particle Mode.

For explosions like that you should consider two more things -

1. a LOT of these explosions are done using footage of real explosions. Most of the explosions in Stealth for example, and also the space explosions in Battlestar Galactica. Lots of free footage here : http://www.detonationfilms.com/free_stuff.htm

2. You can bet that the explosion image you posted wasn't created without effort, practice, patience or a combination. For example, each little debris with the little smoke trail has to be set up on it's own, seperate from the smoke and fire. It's as hard to do a good explosion as it is to animate a good walk cycle, and just like animation, it's almost always done by a specialist. For the Halo3 trailer there were 3 people who did nothing but explosions and mortar fire, for 4 weeks (and at least 12 hrs a day), and the trailer was only 45 seconds long. They get paid BIG bucks too! So get your nose to the grindstone!! :goodluck:

Holy mother of god.

That site is amazing.

I will order all of the discs, at $8.99 just because they deserve it for not being a bunch of money grubbing whores.

I mean there are crappy corporate stock photos of smiling turds in business suits that cost ten times more than one of those CD's.

Amazing.

Dang Toby thanx! Getting this stuff for when I have some quick work.

I know they have stuff for free... but I think these guys deserve some dough.

I am buying their HD explosions CD's... at $25 a pop thats not bad!

Yeah that is a great site! Thanks a bunch! These free files will be perfect for my movies!
I do want to learn how to make my own 3d explosions at some point though.

I'd just like to call the people who spent weeks and weeks blowing stuff up for the Halo advert "Jammy, Jammy BŁ*$&ds" in the best Monty Python tradition.

*sighs* I wanna blow stuff up! Oh, hold on - I'm between contracts right now. Where's "splode.p" gone.... ;)

I'll pass that on the next time I see one of them. The explosions were all done in Houdini btw, hardcore stuff, no footage on polys there -
