I'm running 8.5 currently on my dual 2.7 gig Mac with 2.5 gigs of ram. If I upgrade to 9.0 could I expect it to be as stable as 8.5? 8.5 runs great on my machine, and I'm affraid of upsetting the Apple cart ( no pun intended ).

Why don't you try the demo? I found LW9 to be more stable than 8.5.

Is it safe to run two versions on the same machine? What happens to the prefernce files?

No problem at all, they each create their own prefs I believe. Some people have half a dozen versions or more loaded!

All I need to know is if 9.0 is production ready? Will it go smooth, or am I in for a lot of crashes?

9 is good but 9.2 is fantastic for stability on my Mac. Plus the new features are extremely nice, fast radiosity, node surfacing just to mention a few, 9.2 final should be out soon or there is always OpenBeta to get a copy sooner. You would have to purchase 9 though LOL

Radiosity is so fast i use it in almost all of my renders.

Follow the link and watch the video. One of the effects houses at least, upgraded to 9.0 during the making of the film 300 and were very glad they did so.
