Well for 12 bucks more you can get a 65nm 2x2m cache that runs 20 percent faster with no overclock worries or heat

thats got dirt cheap Screamer Net machines written all over it.

Hard to beat the 805 though if youve got the airflow and the cooling to crank it up

Yep, for around 2 grand now you can have a 20 CPU renderfarm.

Life is just sweet

The 805 isn't a fast chip to begin with though. Sure its dual core, but its still netburst, which means it sucks :)

Also keep in mind that Tom's had to go through cooling solutions to get to 4.1GHz. They needed water cooling for 4.1GHz, and then even with that the CPU could not out do the top end AMD chips. Not to mention how much money you'd need to spend to power the suckers (if in a render farm). At 4.1GHz it consumed 241 watts... at idle... and 474 at load. Thats crazy :P

Then to top it off, sure you save money on the CPU, but to get an OC like that you need to spend more on the Motherboard, RAM, PSU, and cooling solution (which can get pricey for a good one). My guess is you end up spending just as much for performance you are not guaranteed vs a more costly CPU that you are. And with modern processors (the toms article is over a year old..) closer to $300 for performance thats better than the $1000 offering in the article, the cost advantage quickly slips thanks to the factors above... and if you really wanted, modern CPUs could be OC'd on air, and quickly beat out the 805.

*shrug* just my opinion...

The Pentium D sucks.

Thats what I have the pentium D. Faster than my old 1.6 Ghz single core cpu. But not as fast as I was lead to believe. Oh well, I guess it will have to do for now. Hopefully upgrading won't require a new motherboard + extras.
