You are more than welcome to checkout the animations on my web site. The flash logo on my site was created in lightwave btw.
As for hair, lightwave does come with a plugin called saslight. Its somewhat limited but the big brother sassquatch can be purchased if you need it. Plus there are two or three other hair plugins available. Choice baby.

As was mentioned, you do have options:

Fiber Factory has become a good Sas alternative, and "True Art" (excellent 3rd party developer..check out his modeling plugins while you are at it...pretty amazing):

is working on another.

By the way, the companion upgrade is for licensed users of competing packages (but I believe Photoshop is mentioned among those)

The qualifying software for companion upgrade is as follows:

Softimage XSI, Maya, 3ds max, Cinema 4D, Modo, After Effects, Photoshop, Shake, Digital Fusion

Just a question, I have Photoshop and Shake, can I get two companion updates or is it one per person? When I bought LightWave I bought the full version, eventhough I already owned Photoshop at that time.

I think once you own one copy of LightWave you can buy as many companion copies as you want.
