I've started work on doom3 import/export plugins. I have the beginnings of a working import plugin. It works, but it imports the models face down instead of standing up. Doom is Z up and Lightwave is Y up. I'll correct that problem after the exporter is done. You can get the plugin and source code from the link.

Ooh, mate, thanks for this.

There was some years ago a standalone converter, but yeah.(posted on the Doom3world.org Forums)

I just love the possibilities(even more the GUI system) given from id with their D3 Engine(Q4/prey/ later ETQW)(altough the game itself had some weak points).

Wrote my first 1k line script with the D3 script language.(but was just a simple animated Menu script) *g*

Update: The plugin now includes an exporter for the md5mesh. Just have to make an animation exporter and clean the whole thing up then the Doom3 import/export suite will be "done".:)

Oh man, very tempting to get back into D3 animation with lightwave!

The first version of animation export has added to the plugins.:)

All the pieces are now in place and the code just needs some cleanup and bug fixing for the final version.

would something like this work with Quake 4?

I just got Quake 4 a little while ago. From what I've read it looks like it would work.

If Q4 uses MD5 animation. . . I think it would. That's debatable because I know Raven Software added a lot of tools and new effects to Q4 though it is based on the Doom3 Engine.

It's done!:D
The Doom3 import/export plugins are done. They will import and export meshes and animations in the md5mesh and md5anim formats. It is also compatible with Quake 4, I did an import test a few days ago. I'll be replacing the sketchy notes on the website with some real instructions later.

Thanks for this plugin -- very helpful.

A bit off-topic here, but -- I remember seeing a Quake 3 importer/exporter a while back (I love those Q3 models) and I was wondering if you guys know where I might find it?

Edit: Nevermind -- found it!

Got some tutorials up for doom3 import/export. They use hellknight to show import/export to lightwave and use the lostsoul flying demon to show custom object creation and import to the doom3 editor.

The doom3 importer has been updated to work with ET:Quake Wars md5mesh format, version 11 and the number of meshes in a single file has been increased from 24 to 96. The exporter still writes a version 10 file. So at this time the plugins work with Doom3, Quake 4 and ET:Quake Wars.
