Need some nice 640x480 30fps webcam suggestions.

iSight would be my first choice, as I already have one and love it's functionality. But I need another for my parents, and Apple is no longer selling them (http://www.macrumors.com/2006/12/17/isight-no-longer-available-u-s/), or even acknowledging that they exist outside of being included in the new machines. Try for yourself:

That said, does anyone have any other awesome webcams with mics build in that can perform to this level of quality?

you can still buy iSights if you want one. Just not from Apple.

Thanks, but honestly that's not very helpful. I can't buy them from authorised resellers. And I'm not keen on paying $300 - $400 for used ones from Amazon or Ebay.

Do you have some purchasing source online that I don't know of? The only one that google yeilded was DealaDeal.com (http://www.dealtree.net/cart/select_item.cfm?cont=92890), which I've never heard of and have no desire to share my credit card info with.

Sorry, there are no third party cameras that live up to that level of quality at that price. And the few FireWire cameras out there that are of sufficient speed lack the subtle niceties of the iSight, such as the noise canceling microphone and the control over focus from the app.

Which sucks.

You can get a lot of the Logitech or Creative cameras to work on the Mac using an open source driver (got it to work here with my el-cheapo quickcam ), but they lack all the extras (face tracking, audio in etc...) - just basic video in support.
Also, iChat won't work since it uses a different video in API it seems (Skype is fine though).

cheers,
Mike

the reason that you an't buy an isight from the uk store but can from usa store is that the isight fails eu health guidlines in that it contains lead, that's why it was pulled....they are working on a new isight camera for europe thoguh.

...and just in case you want to use ichat with a non apple cam, there's also

http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/

works quite well here! btw. i'm using a shareware webcam driver from ioxperts which adds even face tracking for a cheap philips toucam with i-chat. the drivers can be found here:

I shop in the USA store, as it's cheaper and I'm originally from the USA. It's not available there either.

that actually makes sense...apple ususally run down stock levels before introducing new products...and with the isight failing eu regs it make no sense to have 2 versions of a product...so they must have depleated their stock to zero and then will launch a eu friendly new camera which will also be available everywhere....the eu store has not listed isight for many months whereas the usa store had listed it up until recent.

Skype recommends this driver on their page for USB webcams:

http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/

here's the supported camera's list:

http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/cameras/index.php

In general, you can do pretty well with the Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 (not the new 5000 series!), but not quite up to the iSight level of quality. (I've tested both and was happier with the iSight.)

If you're going to do much chatting over the web (skype, ichat, etc.) I strongly recommend a headset because it will kill echoes for the people you're chatting with. Try a Logitech headset like:

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Premium-USB-Headset-980374-0403

which is quite comfortable and has a decent pickup on the mike.

sorry about my first post had no idea the price had been driven up that much. Apple accessory inflation sucks. For those prices you'd do better just to get a new iMac. I'd have to agree with Chilton, nothing's really comparable.
