Hey guys. Several people from the online LW community got some ideas from Maxwell Render about sharing surfaces. As I understand it, Maxwell has a scene just for showing surfaces. So we decided to design (http://www.spinquad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14147) and launch (http://www.spinquad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16741) a standardized scene and objects for showing surfaces. We then decided to automate the process and distribute this as a plugin.

http://www.auroragrafx.com/images/Posting/PresetStandard/Plugin101.jpg

The instructions for using this plugin scene (including usage videos) and the location of the plugin for downloading can be found here:
LW Preset Plugin Instructions & Download (http://www.lededesigns.com/component/option,com_nodes/Itemid,4/task,file/id,5/)

As an example of what the plugin generates, here's a preset I created to show simple nodal occlusion.

http://jezza.lwidof.net/cgtalk/11021-08-950917.jpgThe outer ball is always what your surface gets applied to when you run the plugin.

Preset Central are in talks with us about supporting our new preset system, and the Preset Repository (http://www.lededesigns.com/component/option,com_nodes/Itemid,4/) already supports this (and indeed, had a large part in design/implementation).

Now that surface organization and rendering has been simplified, let's take this opportunity to share our interesting surfaces. My simple nodal occlusion preset is here. (http://www.lededesigns.com/component/option,com_nodes/Itemid,4/task,presetview/node_id,61/)

Nice Idea but...

This is much better than the simple ball or whatever, and very handy. I do wonder about starting a new repository in the form of a thread though. I was extremely impressed with the demo I saw of PS plant, and really see that as the way forward, not least because of the very clever way it integrates into LW, and is smart about things like required plug ins / shaders.

Can I suggest that if we do take this forward in this thread, it could be with the definite objective of getting the presets incorporated into the LW preset shelves as distributed with the product? These kind of things are immensly valuable to the newer user in particular, and would have maximum benefit if distributed to everyone by default.

Good points. And for the reasons you mention, my post links to the Preset Repository (http://www.lededesigns.com/component/option,com_nodes/Itemid,4/). There's no other functioning preset site at the moment, and the Preset Repository guys were instrumental in the design and implementation of this scene and system. So this thread is better than no sharing at all...and with a couple of preset websites adopting these standards, the posting of people's presets at those sites should follow naturally.

As to PSPlant, the Preset Central guys are aware of what we are doing (as we are aware of their happenings), and we're in the process of determining how best to work together.

Well I really hope that these are going to be passed around between all the various repositories too - and that anyone posting to this thread makes it clear if (or I hope that) these can be passed around freely.

I also think we need some name shifts to make it clear if these projects cover surface presets only, or more general presets.

What, (for example) about light presets? I'm not sure these can be usefully standardised, though larger images to show them off than you get on the preset shelf would be a good idea... There were some great ones we came up with collectively on the 'lets build a nebula' thread on this very forum.

Are there currently any constraints on file sizes? I am thinking of surfaces which rely on image maps to get an effect.

And what of surfaces that don't work well on spheres? Things like image mapped planks would probably not work well on the standard object, or brick walls...

Is there going to be any quality control, or will anything submitted go in?

Don't get me wrong, anything that gives us more widely available and shared presets if GREAT. I'd just hate to see the further fragmentation of what's out there...

Well my first post states up front that this is for surfaces right now. There's talk of expansion to other aspects of the scene though.

As to the rest of it...some of what you are saying is in regards to the very core of the preset standard project. Some of your questions/concerns are specific to the Preset Repository, which in all fairness is a separate but affiliated entity.

That said, this thread is really to get a new and better way to share surfaces (and maybe more eventually). To contribute to the project with questions/suggestions like these (which all of us would love--the more input the better), I'd request discussing it at the project thread:

http://spinquad.com/forums/showthread.php?p=176552#post176552
so that those that aren't interested in getting into the nitty gritty can steer clear of it while still grabbing/uploading presets.

But that goes for everyone. We'd love all the input we can get.

Lede and I set up this repository because we were/are not aware of a currently active one. As for preset central and PSPlant I have actually been actively talking with Ben and hope we can find a way to integrate into it. The current scene we have is just the first finalized go around for us. We already know there is a need for a few changes and in fact I encourage people to come make comment's/suggestions for future development. This has been a marvelously active collab project with dozens of various LW users. If any body is interested in making changes and/or improvements please come visit the latest thread here (http://www.spinquad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16897).

great idea...same sort of thing that vray have done..really helps spread the availablility of surfaces/shaders and will help many people who are struggling with nodal too!

nice one!

Cress,
Thats the idea is to get community involvment in teaching stuff like this. When I first got nodal back when 9.0 was released there wasn't much to help me but the wonderful writtings of Tess and his help got me going. Since then we have tried to take this to the next level and get other new people involved and working on their own textures.

Nick,
Right now the scene is focused to work with textures right now and we would like to start including the other aspects LW presets into the plugin but those need to be started and get developed. We don't have a projected start date for these but they should be started with the amount of work that can be done with those presets. And I do remember that building a better nebula, I learned a lot from it and still reference it as often as I can.

As for who can use this scene/plugin it was made by the cummunity for the community and as long as I'm invlovled thats the focus we will work twords.

And now back to your scheduled program. Here is a preset I did that kind of got me into nodes in the first place.

Download (http://www.lededesigns.com/component/option,com_nodes/Itemid,4/task,presetview/node_id,36/) it from our repository

A preview of the preset panel. It's fully functional...just doing some testing.

Hit a button to open.
Select the preset from the top menu.
Doubleclick to add to selected surface.

Automatically detects the presets you have created with the Preset Standard Plugin.

absolutely nice! great jeremy! what do you think about adding a button for quickly recall the creation of a new preset? (I mean, a link to the command for creating presets..)

and.. in next version  we want a button to automatically share the selected preset  I know, I'm terrible!

Congratulations to all those involved in the development of this project

Having signed up for this site http://www.lededesigns.com/component/option,com_nodes/Itemid,4/ about a month ago I can't help but be impressed with what it has to offer.

Given the incredible levels of support Lightwave exponents give to anything or anyone involved with Lightwave this site should develop into our communities preset bank.

A very slick project with great potential.
