Is there any program available that allows a 'walkthrough' of a terrain mesh? For instance, if I were to create a basic terrain in Lightwave, could i then use another piece of software to load the terrain, and then take input from the user to move through said terrain?

the problem with most engines is that i am extremely rusty on programming. this is something that i was trying to avoid having to reteach myself C, C++, or the like. i use to have a similar program a long time ago but i cant remember the name now. i will check out what you suggested and see if i can muddle through it. thank you for the quick reply

Hi there Noptcha,

Have you had a look at Unity 3D.
Very intereting.
Just might be what you are looking for.

i'm using unity and yes it is mac only for development. it will compile games for windows but the ide is mac. if you have/can get a mac, i highly recommend it. super well thought out and put together.

i've never used this one but i believe beyondvirtual was originally intended to work like unity on the pc - more of an "artist's" engine. not sure how far along they are with it. most likely though you'll have to get your hands in at least a little scripting no matter what you use.

is this of any use, its a very basic viewer i thru together for the LWG forums, first use the lw converter to b3d
then name your model part_1 or part_2 etc and just throw it in the media folder the viewer will pick it up

lightwave to b3d converter by Lee Page, read the notes for tips
LWConverter_V3.zip (http://www.btinternet.com/~coloured.pixels/zips/LWConverter_V3.zip)

simple level viewer, please read the notes
level_viewer.zip (http://www.btinternet.com/~coloured.pixels/zips/level_viewer.zip)

Hmm, just posted a review of 3dgamestudio in another thread, but it could work well for you.

It has "modules" which do the basic game functions, ie. character walking. (also, shoot, car, basic movement ai etc.) but just importing a lightwave terrain, adding the walking module, and saving the project as a template, should allow you to have a basic template for any project that just needs walking around, and you can modify code from there as needed/ add buttons, interface etc with a bit of extra code - main plus of 3dgs is the community.

Don
have a great day

Try beyond virtual. For only $150 it gives you templates to start with or you can create from scratch.

(Starting with a template allows you to to swap your terrain and test the walkthrough literally in seconds).

very cool program.
