View Full Version : Animation saving DV Codec crash

01-29-2007, 12:43 PM
I'm attempting to save animations to a DV format avi, but upon writing the first frame in either Type 1 or Type 2 DV, Lightwave V9 promptly crashes. Actually it continues rendering in the background until I click "Ok" on the crash prompt box, at which point it closes itself.

It does this in V9 and the OpenBeta build 1118.

I am running WinXP64, 64bit lightwave.
2 gigs of ram, AMD X2 proccessor..

Anyone had any problems like this? Saving to uncompressed is workable, but my harddrive space is a more valuable than whatever increase in quality I might get by not compressing the frames.

Save out an image sequence, then compile the frames.

That is essentially no different then rendering to an uncompressed avi aside from the fact that it adds even more steps to get my render in the format I want :(

The specific error message, as from the Windows even log is:

Faulting application lightwav.exe, version, faulting module qdv.dll, version 6.5.3790.1830, fault address 0x00000000000284fc.

qdv.dll seems to be a component of Windows, not specifically LW.
The trial version of 3DSMax v9 will render to a DV file, seemingly using the same codec.

Not sure if this will help however check your resolution since dv is 720X480 and not the standard 720X486 NTSC. I think this is because it lacks the 6 lines one of which includes the CC data. Let me know if this works for you and I will add it as a FAQ to help other users along the way.

Crashes just the same. Renders one frame, crashes, starts the second and freezes. no change.

What codec are you using? The one that I used was the Main Concept DV.

I'm running on Macs so I'm not sure I can provide much assistance with the codec issue you're having, but if you're outputting for broadcast or any TV/DVD you'd probably want to render an image sequence anyway and export that image sequence from something like After Effects. I haven't found LW able to render 29.97 fps and this becomes an issue.

Can you reinstall the DV codec? If that's busted I can see how that would make LW wig out.

You know, now that I realize that lightwave itself isn't producing the DV stream I'm wondering if the codec just doesn't allow encoding.

It's whatever is bundled with windows, it seems, and none of the other codecs I have installed show up in lightwave.

I'm assuming there are 32 and 64bit codecs...

I can't imagine that any rendering to a compression scheme that needs neighboring frames would be a good idea.

It's been said many times before. Render image sequences. Compress in post.
