OK, time to start arranging the next London gathering I think, after the fun of last night's Hilton session...

There was a general feeling that Feb would be good - how about Friday Feb 9?

For those who have not been before, we generally pick the Sakespear's Head, in Holborn - very easy to get to.

There's also the Yahoo group, (which includes maps and some photos) http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/lwuk/

I've started a new thread as the last one was huge and was not notifying new posts, (perhaps because it was huge!)

Dang, i was gonna ask for the 2nd, so i can start my Birthday weekend in style ;).

Chris: we usually do Fridays, which means the first one you can do is the 16th? Thats prolly doable for me.

Yes, you would .... If you were coming to my house for dinner :-D.
If we are meeting for a boozers meet, then Holborn is best. The pub is called the Shakespeares Head and is about 5-10 doors down from the station.

I'd like to make it the 2nd (a week tomorrow) but am not fussed really.

Parm, TheDave, Chilli, what say you?

So what happens at these things beside booze and more booze.

Is there a show and tell segment, eg. LW studios show off their latest works in progress??

And if one does come, can one visit said studios to see what people are doing or is that stalking and frowned upon. :D

Nothing that formal... Though people have brought along laptops before now, (Bog has that rarest of toys, a laptiop with an Imax screen...) to show what they are working on, or prints. One time the Preset Central guy had his new surface system on a laptop, (which was very impressive).

I'd like to make it along one of your meetings. It's only 25 return on the train from Edinburgh. And park benches are becoming more feasible at this time of year.

I just need a couple of weeks warning so that I can leave it till two days before to tell the wife.

Anyway have a good 'un.

Oh, and as we we're talking about the silly / fun / 'groboto' software, (a sort of fractal / lsystem thingy), here's a sample I knocked up using objects exported for Lightwave.

Very William Latham, Nick! Are there tools for that sort of thing in LW?

Having a Layout-based sinus-designer thingy would be fun.

starbase1
02-03-2007, 03:18 PM
The actual Groboto stuff is VERY William Latham, particularly some of the animated stuff. It's pretty cheap and there is a demo. It will export the results as OBJ files, (this obviously lacks the animation).

It's pretty easy to play with if you look sat the docs, (it was originally aimed at kids!), and is Mac as well as PC. Kind of fun, but nothing serous. See: http://www.groboto.com/

Somewhat off-topic, but if there's any After Effects-using LW artists here (like me!), Adobe are doing one of their "Inspired Media" evenings on the 27th Feb (next tuesday) at the Curzon Cinema, Soho

It's free, with drinks and canapes, networking and - for all you ego maniacs out there - you can show your work on the big screen at the end!

For those who are not aware, there is also a very low volume yahoo group / list LWUK. On the web part there are maps etc... But the short version is that we go for the Shakespeare's Head on Holborn. It's a huge Wetherspoons pub, which also does reasonably priced food. Its a few yards from Holborn Tube, and within fairly easy each of Waterloo and Euston.

It's not always easy to spot people, so a mobile number may be handy.

Feel free to bring along prints of your stuff, or, (in the case of Bog), Imax scale laptops with video...

Sorry I did not notice when I left.

NoiseBoy was the last one to leave (I needed to run for a train) - he may have spoted it.

No orange scarf, sorry JH

You might as well ask the staff if they've seen it. I lost my passport at a bar here, and got it back a week later when I noticed it was gone.

Good intro Nick, sums up the ethos of the evenings well. Not too sure about the flag waving though, a bit too barmy army for my liking, but hey I have difficulty rendering my way out of a cube most of the time so artistic crit is definitely not my forte. I do like Chillis' glass cow.

I know what you mean about the flag, though I tend to think that as long as it is only used by the far right, things won't get any better...

Anyone else feel the union jack should go? I could put the flag of London up instead, (Cross of St George + red sword), but I'm not sure anyone would know what it was!

Oh, and Chilli did the beer, not the cow...

howsabout a big pic of big ben - with the LW logo superimposed over the front clock face :)

Or just nick the silhouette graphic from the HP sauce bottle?

-- yeah, yeah - very "gor blimey mary por-pins" I know!

I think it's a cryin' shame that a proud national simbol has been hijacked by anacephalic knuckle-draggers. Hell, even the term "National" has been corrupted.

Bloody hooligans. I say keep the flag - it's not the BNP's, it's Britain's.

From an aesthetic point of view, the Union Flag just doesn't work. One color too many and too much going on with stripes. And you just can't get away from what it implies from recent dubious adoption and abuse.
The English flag looks much better. Why not use that if it's a London group?

A waving flag is also a wee bit early 90's "I can do graphics" imo.

Well, the English flag has been taken over by football thugs...

I quite like the Big Ben idea though... We could set the clock to the time we start!

Look, this page is just something I threw together as a starting point - I'd love to see anything anyone else wants up there, so let rip! Fizzing beer glasses, Big Ben, (or the westminster clock tower for pedants)...

I do think we should use the LW cow somewhere though... Anyone good enough to stick a chrome cow into a Constable landscape?!?!

hey c'mon! they're london! haha. They're not supposed to relate to the LW part of the title, but the London part. :D

anywho, just there in case they were of use.

Oh, fair enough, and thanks for the material - it just seems better to render! Mind you, all those frilly bits around the clock face would not be easy...

Really dumb basic question, but where can I find the Lightwave Logo? I wanna do a render of it for a quick Photoshop I'm doing for this

never mind - I found it.

Here's my first attempt - it's a bit crude (cos I just did a simple key on the sky), but hope it amuses!
