I was wondering wether I could render an image and then sepperate all materials in seperate image layers, so for instance if I would render this here,

I would get a psd (or whatever other format that supports layers) with 3 layers containing this;

Layer1:

Layer2:

As you can see they're all Z-culled properly as well meaning it needs a proper alpha channel for each layer. Ofcourse on simple shaded shapes like these you could just use the wand tool in Photoshop but with some more advanced shading that isn't possible.

So I would really like to here any suggestions from you guys and girls.

I personally would just render out each object (or group of objects) on a separate pass (with a separate alpha) and recomposite the passes in Photoshop or AfterEffects.

If you're looking for some automatic way of doing it, I don't know of any.
