Hi,

If you have a Purple Eve3 USB dongle for the Mac, and you don't have any other (newer) dongles, and if you have LightWave 9, please email me ( [email protected] ).

Thanks,
-Chilton

NewTek replaced my purple dongle last week, with another purple dongle.

What gives?

I would like to know what caused that dongle to fail while your at it.

Hi Eidetiken,

I have no clue why it went bad. The one they replaced it with should be good though. We're mainly concerned about the Mac-only purple dongle that says, "Eve3" on it. The 'Duo' ones that we've been shipping for some time now are fine. Those Eve3 only ones will pose a problem for the UB, because the security framework for them is not a UB, and probably will never be.

Mine's purple . . . when we went from ADB to USB. NT has never offered to replace it.

I've got a purple one too... dongle, that is :) I got it when I bought LW8, now upgraded to 9.
And yes I (almost exclusively) run LW on OSX.

I'm not a Lightwave 9 user, but do have an Eve3 and a MacBook Pro, and I will be a 9 user as soon as the UB version comes out and I've saved my pennies for the upgrade (whichever comes later). So should I e-mail now, or cross that bridge when I come to it?

Mine says "Duo" so that's okay right?

I have a "classic" - I probably got it in 2001, maybe (at the latest) spring 2002. Just as I got my first real USB/G4 tower...

Yes, but like Chilton says, *specifically* an eve3 dongle, just for Mac. Not a Duo dongle. If you have a sticker wrapped around your dongle it should say Mac USB if it's just that, or Duo if it's for PC and Mac. If you don't have a sticker, then the word Duo or eve3 is printed just under the Rainbow logo (on the same side as the LED).

Hi Beevee,

What is this all about?
Would like to know the reason behind the question, please.

Regards,
Nigel.

Nigel.. Chilton already mentioned the reason earlier in the thread.

Yes, exactly. There are a number of PC LightWave users still using the old parallel port dongle for example. When the 64-bit version of Windows XP first came out it did not support the parallel dongle (this has now changed), so parallel port dongle users needed to swap dongles for a purple USB duo dongle like mike_stening's. The same situation is now happening with the Mac, and so we need to ascertain how many users need to swap dongles to be able to benefit immediately from UB yumminess (technical term). People new to LightWave have red USB dongles and are not faced with such issues...

PS for Cagey5 wrt your sig. There's a great quote from the OUP EdPress News that goes: "It's is not, it isn't ain't, and it's it's, not its, if you mean it is. If you don't, it's its. Then too, it's hers. It isn't her's. It isn't our's either. It's ours, and likewise yours and theirs."

Mine is purple with a worn out sticker that says "LW 7 Mac X-Plat Upgrade" for what that's worth. All my Worley stuff (as well as a few other plugins) are tied to it.

Hi guys,

Preventative research right now. I'm trying to determine the number of users who are using those dongles. We may have a software solution--I'm not sure on that yet though. I'll pass along more info as it develops...

I don't get the issue, is it because the Eve3 framework is not universal binary? So it should still run, just under Rosetta? Maybe it is impossible to talk to Rosetta apps with a UB?

This can work if you're still on a PPC Mac. But it would require additional effort if we didn't support it on both Intel and PPC Macs. I'm looking into that now.

If our dongles get swapped, will we get the same ID? I have a lot of plugins tied to this thing...

If you get the software solution working perhaps you could pass it on to Bauhaussoftware to get their UB version of Mirage working..seemingly halted because the dongle driver doesn't work on Intel Macs.
