Think of it as a fast way to fake GI-soft-shadows.

There is currently a plugin called "SG_AmbOcc" which works on the mac which I've used a couple of times. I rendered out three images so you can see the difference.

These images are rendered without raytraced shadows and one pass only.

The first one is a clean render, no shaders applied.

The second has SG_AmbOcc applied to the floor object only.

The third has SG_AmbOcc applied to everything.

Note, I just slapped it on the object, there are numerous settings to tweak the look, it's very nice actually.

Hope that helps :)

You can download it here: (shader, not node)

Sorry but I don't understand "prelim models" but I have used it on animations with good (and fast) results.

The renders above are lit with a single distant light, how cool is that? :D

And, when you scale down the effect a bit, it adds a lot of "mood". And it's pretty fast.

@DarthMole:
Thanks, had forgotten where I got it. :)
