Hi,

I've noticed something kinda odd. The UB version of Photoshop appears to be about as fast as the CFM version on a G5.

And according to BareFeats, it be slower, yarr...

Why?

Maybe it's running some internal debug/monitoring code. Mysterious.

It doesn't sound like the app's been heavily threaded either - I saw one poster saying CPU usage in activity monitor maxed out at 92.5%. Of course, in activity monitor the percentage displayed is not a percentage of all CPUs, but is cumilative - so on a 4 core system the max is 400%

Also, the old PPC mac codebase in photoshop probably had a lot of hand-tweaked altivec code. For the xcode rebuild, they may have just chucked that and used the autovectorising tools in the compiler.

I know one things for sure , It screams on a macbook pro compared to the cs2 Ive been running for the past few months. Cant wait for that lightwave build to do the same :)

I'm impressed. I created and saved a 10GB image. It was sweet. It took a half an hour to save, but it did save. Launches quickly too.

The only thing awesomer than a CS3 UB would be... Nah, you've heard it before.

Yup it's running nicely for me too. I'm surprised how much I miss the normal brush cursor though, I find it very difficult to paint accurately with larger brush sizes and the precise cursor. I hope they bring out a revised beta that fixes that problem!

I'd consider it myself, if they were only cheaper. They retail for over a grand each, and I would need two of those mammoths.

it's early days yet but it doesn't seem much quicker than the Power version, screen redraw is also a little slow IMHO, i tend to work on alot of very large highres stuff and need the extra speed that is potentially available but at the moment there really doesn't appear to be much native optimissation, hopefully it will change as they update it. and not much in the way of groundbreaking aditions either.
but then i think adobe have put this out very early in the beta cycle.

i also have the cpu monitor on for most of the time so as to check that things are being done when not much appears to be happening and its not using the procs to their full yet.

Hi Mike,

Well eh... I thought I posted the benchmarks somewhere for the G5 CFM vs the Universal Binary. I see that I did not.

Yes, the UB of LightWave is faster across the board. Even on the G5.

I would suspect that the Photoshop Beta still has lots of de-bugging code in it, which may be slowing it down.

Either that or Chilton needs to show those Adobe hackers some new tricks. ;)
