I think you are trying to stencil on the surface of a object. To do this you will need to make a shape in the background layer and bevel it as so it will penetrate the box surface. Then put the box in the foreground layer and the triangle shape in the background layer and run the Solid Drill / Stencil command.

If you use the drill tool instead of solid drill, then the triangle won't need to be extruded. But your original object axis must match the world axis(in other words don't rotate the object after you create it), because the drill tool uses one of the 3 axis to drill with.
If you use drill instead of solid drill, you need to select the polygon you want stenciled otherwise the opposite polygon will also get drilled as the drill is infinite along the axis you select.
In the end drill or solid drill will accomplish the same thing.

i dont know how to tell this but i will try!

im trying to use a backdrop and then build from that: pic_1..
i have use the a box around the car, now a need to know how to draw out the detil, like the lights and other things.
if i draw right on the pic "pic_2" it will not be on the top polygons , it will be on the wrong side or on the bottom.
what i want is to draw on the backdrop and it will draw on the box so i can bevel out detil from the car...
im not sure how to to this.. hope you understand what i meen..
remember im a newbee..:)

We were using the word stenciling. If you look at the drill and solid drill tools you will find a button for stenciling. what stenciling does is take the shape you drew and apply it to the object in the foreground layer. Kind of like coping the shape onto the object. Then the object you drew is not needed any more, unless you wish to use the same shape for another section of the object.
The stencil on the object is then selectable and can be beveled.

Good luck box modeling this. I would use splines all the way. Save yourself a big headache. IMO.
