I'm trying to animate the foam that appears as water washes up on a beach. Found a couple of tutorials on foamy beaches, but they are static. I made an animated displacement plane that washes up nicely, but don't know where to start with foam part.

I think you might try hypervoxels althought that would take long rendering and calculating times.

HVs or geometry with textures could both work. The HVs wouldnt necessarily take too long if you carefully control where they render. :)

What I would do is make the water slightly higher around the beach edges, and lower out to sea (it doesn't have to be much, just a difference between the two) Then you could use procedural (or hand drawn) textures scrolling upwards with a very small Y scale to emulate the ripples/wash with a small amount of HVs for touch ups.

Here's a quick sample.

thanks dodgy,

Interesting. That might work if I don't exagerate the water mesh so much. I'll give it a try next weekend.
