2:
is there any way to save the lighting set up, or at least copy the prefs file, which i cant find

I have no idea about Vertex Paint, but we have made a few years ago toolset to load and save/bake Vertex Maps from/to regular images VMapManager (http://www.trueart.pl/?URIType=Directory&URI=Products/Plug-Ins/VMapManager)..

With this plug-in you can paint weight maps or vertex color maps in Photoshop and just load to mesh from image..

saving & baking out a vert map is not a problem its the program vert paint its self, i think

just a heads up on this one..

if anybody uses the save custom palette in vpaint then ive found you have to type the ext (.pal) as the program doesnt save the palette with the ext
and this causes the reload error

weird and unusual

but still an impressive tool
