View Full Version : Occlusion Baking.. how do you get rid of the graininess?

I'm getting a very grainy bake when occlusion baking. Where is the setting I need to change to smooth this out?

If I were you, I'd just take it in photoshop and use smart blur, blur or any of the remove grain plugins

If you are baking to use it in a 2d texture map, the problem with blurring in a 2d program, is you pick up blurring from the edge of the template onto the actual map.

Unless you maybe bake object far enough beyond it's uv template so the background color doesn't become blurred into the bake.

After seeing the killer baked Max stuff, I'd like to include baked ao into my textue maps on objects.

If the surface is smooth, there shouldn't be any grain in an AO bake at all, I'd think.

use solidify on an exported 32bit png you will have to overbake at least 1 pixel (be save and take 2) and expand select the empty area with 1 pixel
then delete the aa edges to black, then solidify

then blur

Cool I'll try that. Someone else also posted to select the occlusion node right click edit, andincrease the samples.. THAT I think it the LW method.

Yep. I'll use a combo of increased rendering and your method. Seems the best of both worlds. BTw what exact setting do you use to overbake the edges? is 2.0 2 pixels? (on a 1000x1000map)

Just tried that, and it works GREAT! I just kicked up the occlusion samples by one factor or so, and rendertime was still very fast, but after the photoshop trick looked killer.

I'm surprised tha's not documented anywhere for people begining to use a pretty new feature.

Now I need to find out the differences between solidify a, b, c.
