Hi Again

I have an issue which is giving me some trouble.
I have a pin sitting on a measuring device (Line Pair Phantom)

I want the pin to fade in over time.
I have set an envelope for the transparency, speculars and reflectivity which, for the most part, made the pin vanish.

The problem is that the shadow is still cast as well as the surface reflection.

I need the pin with all its parts to come in at the same time.

I can't turn off ray trace shadows and reflections because of other items that need them.

In my image you can also see a reflector card I am using for the pin but don't want in the surface of the phantom.

Found it

Always the way. Spend an hour looking on the forums, post the question and
then "one last look" and there it is...

Object dissolve :-)

Yup, object dissolve should do the trick. But you can't use shadow mapped spotlights (shadow maps don't work with transparencies), you need to make sure to use raytraced shadows.

Yup. The shadow map with dissolve limitation has been here forever and is extremely annoying. I've poked NewTek about it - perhaps more folks doing similarly via [email protected] might have the desired effect ;)

Historically, Prem Subrahmanyam's ShadowBlatt shader plugin would fix this up (although with slight fringing). Sadly, it seems to no longer be available for purchase. I'm not sure if an alternative shader/nodal replacement is available to provide this functionality.
