After rigging up skelegons in Modeler (8.3) and applied weight maps to those, nothing was wrong. Once I bring the model into Layout it looks fine until I convert skelegons to bones. The bones are there and work fine, but half the figures polygons disappear. Please help this beginner!

Try deleting the weight maps. Then convert the skelegons and see what happens; you can always reaassign the weights again with Layout in the background.
I could be wrong, but it sounds like you have assigned both sides to the one tree, the polygons will thus be where they shouldn't ought to be? You are probably better off not using weights at all.

You dont have to use weight maps to get geometry to stick with the bones.
LW bones are deformers already. As Meshpig mentioned, convert the skelegons to bones, adjust the bone falloff/strength etc and test your deformations. From there determine if you only need some hold bones or simple weight maps.
