I know it's out there, somewhere. Could someone please point me to a link for a tutorial for creating and animating texture mapped eyes? In particular, I'm curious as to the best way to handle the eyelids and the blinks, also as texture maps. (The eyes for my characters are separate objects from the rest of the head, sort of like VeggieTales.)

Wow, thanks. That first one is pretty intense, I've read the second one, with the duck.

But what I'm looking for is something that is probably dumb simple. I'd like an eye that is closer to South Park, but in 3D - big white eggs with large pupils that move and eyelids that are texture maps too. What I'm curious about is how to set up the eyelids so that when they are half shut for a squint, the pupil is only partially seen as it slides from one side to another. I would think that the lid is on a different layer with everything around it transparent. So, wrapping multiple animated textures on an egg, animating it, and using layers for the lids. What's a simple approach?

I'll bet this is so simple that the veterans are rolling their eyes...

Its easier to just create a morp for your head/body obj for a blink, and follow the tuts below for eye movement. Even if they look complicated, learn 'em now. Then you will have a better idea how to build your next project from the beginning.

Sometimes things are never as simple as you would like, I've found. If someone has an easier method then the one I am going to propose, then I'm interested as well.

It seems to me the easiest way would be to morph the eyelid. For the pupil, you could make a sphere for the entire eye, select the "end" polys for the sphere and make that texture iris. Make the rest of the eye texture white. In layout, use a null and make that the target for the eye. Now when you move the null, the iris will follow it. Animate the morph half way so the eyelid is halfway shut and animate the null moving side to side.
