I'm wondering if there is a student discount for lightwave. If not, why isn't there a student discount?

being a poor graphic designer, I really could use the help.

Yes, there is. I got mine on a student discount, and then upgraded to a commercial liscense. I got my copy from AcademicSuperstore for about $400.

I just saw version 9 with PDF manual for $170 at Safe Harbor dot com. I don't know what the difference is between it and the $400 version other than the PDF instead of printed manual. Maybe it's a upgrade from a previous version, but it doesn't say.

The cool thing about the Educational version is that you can upgrade it to commercial license at a discount when you start making money with it.

What I'm excited about is that I can get a student discount for Syflex (uber cool cloth simulator). The student price is $220 vs the full retail cost which is $2200.

Of course, I haven't heard since Siggraph about when it's going to be available to LW users...

Yeah, I'd definately be interested in Syflex as well, at least once it's been released for LW.
