View Full Version : Silo cut tool in Lightwave?

Hello, I'm trying to find out if Lightwave has a similar tool as the Cut (x) tool in Silo.
With this tool you can connect any points, edges, polygons without selecting them first.
I find time time consuming having to select points or edges in lw and then use the connect tool, it takes much longer.
People that used Silo know what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the replies.

Have you tried add edges....

I didn't know that tool, I will give it a try right now...

Thanks for a prompt answer

X is actually connect in Silo and it's equivalent in LW9 is connect (L), the split tool in Silo (Alt-x) is similar to add edges (Silo's is faster and smoother in my opinion though!) Split loop (Shift-x) is more like bandsaw in LW.

I know what you mean, In that sense Silo is fantastic and super fast to cut, create geometry, and also to move points, edges and faces instantly without many cumbersome steps.

I wonder why lw doesn't implement something like that.

Have you tried 'Drag'?

Hello, yes I use the Drag tool a lot but check this out:

and this one too:

Let me know what you think!!

Looks like LW's v8 Add Edge tool.. But it's still a lot of clicking.. ;) The easiest splitting is done by EasySplit (http://easysplit.trueart.pl), where you have one click, keep moving mouse drawing lasso, and even hundered polygons splitted at once, or one polygon splited hundered times..

You're right, probably that's the easiest way, but , is that plugin free?
I read about it a long time ago

One thing that I'm really intregued by in the Silo video is the ability to add points WITHIN the poly itself, not just on the edge. I wonder if you could incorporate that function into easy split?

It's possible.. Are you EasySplit customer?

No, I don't have easy split.

I was asking Eric..

I checked database.. Yes, you're :) I hope so EasySplit is working nice for you :) I am thinking about complete rewrite and supporting only LW9+.. From commercial point of view it's senseless, but at least it would handle all edges perfectly (splitting box issue) (and splitting LW9 edges in edge mode as well!)..

To be honest, I don't use easysplit as much as I originally thought. The biggest problem is that I like to work in subDs, and there are many times where easysplit just doesn't function well this way (if the cage is too different from the final isoparms). I'm guessing the SDK doesn't give you access to the isoparms, and so there's nothing you can do to resolve this.

I end up using Add Edges more, just because it offers more precision and control over the process. But when I do have a circumstance where easysplit is the right tool, I'm glad I have it.
