Can someone tell me if there is a painless way to import DWG (autocad) files into LW modeler? Or if not, is there a workaround or plugin that will faithfully import DWG files.

Thanks

I suggest you use adobe illustrator.....
firstly, export to a format that AI can handle.....ai..eps...dxf....pdf......
then .....cleaning them.....save as eps/ai(better>AI8)...
and back to LW........

Thanks for the help. I have been experimenting with AI and CorelDraw. I only have DWG files supplied so I can't change the format. I found that Illustrator CS2 does not like the DWG files I have and returns an error when I try and open. However, I have found that CorelDRAWx3 opens the DWG files perfectly and then I saved them out as EPS from Corel and then used EPSF Loader in Lightwave 9 and it seemed to do quite a clean job of bringing in the splines. Thanks again.

Download the Rhino Demo, which can convert 25times.

I’ve used the following method to import DWG files into LW Modeler (including some DWG files that wouldn’t load correctly using any other plugins/applications):

1. Load the DWG file into ACME CAD Converter (http://www.dwgtool.com/download.htm).
2. Save out the data as an Autocad R12 DXF file (select “save as”, and then select the file format from the drop-down list).
3. Load this DXF file into AccuTrans (http://www.micromouse.ca/index.html) and then select “Save with options” from the File menu and save out as an “LWO Huge” file (this saves all the layer information from the DXF file).
4. Load the LWO file into LW Modeler.

Hope this helps.
