Matte painting is a technique that filmmakers use to extend a scene that was shot on camera with additional elements that weren't really there, and hopefully blend the two convincingly. Its used to extend a set or outdoor shot. One way this used to be done was with very realistic paintings on glass. Now matte paintings are often done digitally and with 3D elements that allow camera movement and perspective changes.
