I was wondering if their is a type of SPAM filter for forums. I have noticed this forum is getting a lot of SPAM lately.

Yes, there is a spamfilter. Unfortunately it's a manual one. Users have to push the little icon to the left, looking like a sign... http://www.newtek.com/forums/images/buttons/report.gif

Would a moderator please delete this thread? It is pointless.

You could always report it as Spam. :D :spam:

It's not too pointless, as there is yet another spam thread started. A porno one at that. :tsktsk:

Yes, but I notice 21 people have viewed it already to find out the urls)

:D

Seriously, though. I go into all spamthreads I see just to report them. I can only assume others do the same...

Yep, do the same here. got the rss thing bookmarked in firefox and can see all new threads posted. Spam threads are easy to see, so I report them asap.

Actually now it's 48. Either a LOT of people feel they have a civic duty or ... :hey:

come on, say it...
or... the forums are populated by a bunch of sex-starved drooling perverts.

Excuse me but I take offence at that!

I'm not sex-starved. The other bit may be accurate, mind.

Short of moderating all posts for all new users (something not really practical at this time), we've implemented all the forms of spam filtering our web team has found. If you know of an automated method we don't already have in place, drop our webmaster a line. I'm sure he'd like to know about it.

Ive turned on Image Verification on register.. but real people are registering and posting the spam so its hard to filter. We are moderating it the best we cant right now though

I've noticed on the sites I supervise, that lately a lot more spam is posted. So this isn't a single case.

Also for example just a user registering and setting a p0rn site as their homepage.

Short of keeping an eye on registration and spam reports by users I don't know of much else to do.

I do know they use proxy pages to register, a means to get around the image verification.

Any chance of a top level icon in the thread overview so you can quickly and easily report these threads? It would avoid those with a civic duty having to open non-worksafe threads. Having to open a post just to report it seems a little....silly, given some of the content.

or you could give some rights to us regulars to move an offending spam thread to a moderator only forum for further evaluation, hiding the thread from view until judgement is done ....

How can you see by a thread title that it is Spam? I just reported a thread in General Discussion that had the title "Movie Collection". It turned out to be porn spam...

This title could have been used by a LightWave-user who wanted to share alot of short movies of his/hers, or simply to discuss movie collections in general.

I hate spam but on the other hand my post count has jumped up by only using the word "reported"
:)

I think this has been discussed about as much as it can be in this and other threads. The new members of our web team are looking into ways to combat the spam, but it will take time. In the meantime, we're getting rid of it as fast as we can. The best thing you can do is still to use the Report function.

I'm just waiting for someone to post spam on this thread, that would be the ultimate cap to it.

I just had an idea!! Could it be possible to time how fast the registration form is filled out? If so the bots that post spam are likely to register extremely fast, and you could block them if they are too fast(say a few seconds).

Bytehawk

that's a known method.
the spambots get around it now by using offsite scripts - it's a dirty trade and all tricks are valid for them.

.. but real people are registering and posting the spam so its hard to filter.
yea thats the point.
i think its impossible that fillter them unless server is AI.
for Computer, there is no defference between spam-post and normal-post.
only us(human) can feel the defference.

i got many spam to my v-bulletin too, so i change setting,
moderate b4 posts are showed in manually. it hard such a big forum.

I wonder, would it be possible to use some sort of Bayesian filter that scans posts when they are posted? The same kind of filter that email clients like Thunderbird use?

I suppose the only problem with that, is it could potentially junk valid posts :P But since its a learning filter, the IT guys working the NT website could teach it as it went along. Ideally it should become more accurate as time goes on.
