After I use edge bevel, and then apply smoothshift...the angle seems to follow the bevel??...How do I keep the same angle(straight in the y axis and not angled on a 45' )
Thanks so much in advance

If you adjust the smoothing angle in the numeric panel, you should be able to come up with the angle you want. (Basically just drag it untill the angle snaps to where you want it). Another solution, though, if you're just wanting to extrude something straight out is to make your selection, hit e (extender plus), then t (move tool) and drag in the direction you want it to extrude.

I'll often choose smooth shift and just click the right mouse button without moving the polys, then manually move them, or nudge them etc. This works particularly well when moving in one of the orthographic directions. (i.e.: "Y")

yeah, extender plus basically does the same thing but a little quicker. And you can use it even While you're holding the move tool.
