hi everyone,
I'm torn between the two (and so are my fellow classmates). As a student, I can't decide whether I should get Lightwave 8 or 9 or none at all...
In class, they're using Lightwave 8. But I heard that they might - if the school ever decide whether they should upgrade the software or not and it could take 6 months to a year- they would switch to Lightwave 9.
I've heard from some people that once I create something in Lightwave 9 I can't open it in lightwave 8 and vise versa. Is that true?

Which one do you think is best? and please keep in mind about - budget.

Thanks once again.

In my opinion LW9 is far better than 8, some people are having problems with bugs but they will get sorted out. For most people 9 is faster and more stable than 8 and has better features (with more to come)

LW9 objects will open in 8 provided they don't use features unique to LW9, Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces or nodal surfaces for instance.

If you're going to invest in something, you might as well get the latest and greatest! Besides, when you get 9, you also get all the future upgrades. But if you buy 8.5, that's as far as you go. No free upgrades.

You should get LW9, as it also has all the features of LW8, so if you are careful, everything will work in LW8 from nine. The main things are Nodes, Subdivision type, and a dynamic feature. There might be more, but those are the things of the top of my head. Just skips those and you should have no problem with compatibility.

Can you offer which school you are from? Maybe NT can contact them about upgrading to LW9. Keep that school a LW school.

9. You can do a lot in 8 - you can do more in 9. There's nothing that works in 8 that doesn't work in 9.

Everything you made in 8 should work in 9 because all that happened in 9 is that they added new features - not take any away.
