Hi there :stop:

Does anyone knows which FBX importer PlugIn version is working best with LW 9?
If I import files which were exported from Cinema 4DXL as FBX with the FBX PlugIn version 8.2 installed, LW9 prompts an error of "not be able to open the FBX file".

If I import the same file with LW 7.5c and der FBX PlugIn version 7.5, it opens the file without any error. but it only shows an empty boundingbox!
What happens here?

I am looking for a transfer solution between Lightwave and Cinema 4DXL.

Can't speak for C4D as I don't own it, but I use the FBX LW8 plugin with MB and it imports and merges just fine.

Dumb question, where do I get this FBX plugin?

Ahh, you need to register for (free) bronze level support over at Alias.
Then pore through the myriad of Maya related downloads until you reach the LW ones. :p

(BTW, as of last time I checked, Alias hadn't released a LW version of the latest FBX plugin, Maya MAX and XSI yes, Lw no .. Hmmm).

Let's try a direct download link ...see if it works. :)

Hi starbase1 - here I send you two links to different FBX im/export PlugIns versions for LW

it will pull in data, but it doesn't handle rigs well if you're trying to transfer them. I've always found that rigs need to exist in LW for the import to work.

I signed up for the Bronze thingy yesterday to try to find that plugin, and I *still* haven't gotten the confirmation email.
Also, this link: http://unity3d.com/lightwave_plugins...8_LW82_WIN.zip is dead.

Hmm, the plugin seems to have problems with MAX 8 FBX files. It says that it does not support FBX 6.0. :thumbsdow

I got mine from 3DBuzz, but don't know if they still have them.
Will hunt down my PDF's, it's for two characters, but the logic is sound.

Don't know anything about MB other than it's an app from the 'other side'.
So I have a question, Can Motionbuilder 7 personal learning edition import and export fbx?, if so, Is it worth the learning curve?

Nope, it can't, it has a 'native' fbl filetype, which even the full package can't read.

To be honest, as of now, I wouldn't buy MB at all, I simply could not justify the cost.

You and both sir, :p There is so much stuff in those rigs, my head hurts, I think I'd need a week just to figure out what he's done to a point it stayed in my head. ;)

I cannot get the FBX plugin to work with Lightwave 9. Is it possible. I can't stand Autodesks website :cursin:

I downloaded from every link I can find... I have a plugin called fxblw.p but it errors out when I try to load it.

I've used it before in LW8 and it wasn't a straight forward task, so I'm hoping I'm just overlooking something.

HELP!

Everytime autodesk updates their FBX plugin its less and less compatible with Lightwave. They want people to use Maya. :)

Hehe, you noticed that too huh Larry? ;)

For the folks struggling with the FBX in LW9, are you using FBXLW80.p ?

I'm using that very successfully.
However, caveat, be aware that the FBX plugin does not like "import" when dealing with characters that are not LW native. It strikes me as a deliberate "block" of functionality, as regardless of if you have the source scene or not, a LW based character will pull in correctly, whereas a Maya one will not.

If you are doing LW->Mb->LW there should be no problems loading your LW setup scene then merging the FBX onto that.

Also, the action MUST be plotted to the character skeleton within MB.

We at the Shirow Project use LW and MB a heck of a lot and have had great success with it.

It strikes me as a deliberate "block" of functionality, as regardless of if you have the source scene or not, a LW based character will pull in correctly, whereas a Maya one will not.I ran into this problem a lot, right back when FBX was a Kaydara product (before Alias or Autodesk), which would suggest the "block" was not deliberate as at the time it would have been in Kaydara's interest to work with as many companies as possible.

I did originally try non-original surce importing into XSI, MAX and Maya, and they all worked fine, except for Lightwave, which made me wonder if there was some problem in LW rather than FBX. Or perhaps the FBX was originally coded with a mistake with regards to LW, and it just never got updated/fixed.

Apologies, just this frustration has been a bit of a bane for me, if the scenes / rigs pull into XSI / Maya ok then yes, the fault must lie in LW somehow, or at least the communication LW "permits".

[QUOTE]Or perhaps the FBX was originally coded with a mistake with regards to LW, and it just never got updated/fixed.

You know, this sorta rings a bell, I'm sure I read at some point that there were "hiccups" in the LW / FBX abilities.

As it stands, we have work arounds implemented for most things now thankfully, still it would be nice if we didn't need them.
