Can some one please tell me why, when I insert a DXF of a 3d architectural model into LW8, it is completely out of scale and rotated?

Is there a setting I am missing when exporting my 3d model, or is there a setting I am missing when I am loading my object into LW8?

Yes, something you missed when importing.

Rotation - acad uses "Z" as vertical, LW uses "Y". There's an option to rotate on each axis in the load panel. (I don't have LW here, and I don't remember which way to rotate it, but it's only one)
Scale - acad's default unit is "inch", LW's is "mm". In the same panel, set custom scale to 0.0254.

Everything will be triangulated, and a lot of the normals will not be aligned. You'll have to fix that manually.

Yeah that rings a bell.
My load panel is not coming up when I load an object anymore. Not sure why it changed but it did.
Thanks for the advice

If you load a Lightwave .lwo file, you won't get the dialog box.
You'll only get it if you load a non-native file type.
You can just load the model you already saved, rotate and scale it.
