I just got my verizon fios 15 mb fiber optic internet and although it is infinitely better then dialup, i am not sure if I am impressed. What speed to do you guys download at? I am receiving files at about 100-200k a second! I was expecting the download ot be 1mb per sec.

depends on how busy the server you`re d/l ing from and their bandwidth I guess, I got 10 meg and get speeds from 100k to 1.7mb per sec depending on where I`m d/l ing from, time of day etc, etc

Try the internet speed test.
My cable is about 700K.

kb/s or kbp/s? I just dont understand, I should be getting great speeds, but I am not. Speakeasy.net says I am running at 8700 kbp/s where these others are saying 2 kbp/s. Most of the downloads so far are downloaded at around 200kb/s.

Thing to remeber is not all web sites have the same speed as you have. Therefore you can only download as fast as the slowest connection between you and that website. I have found websites that appear to be dialup.

yeah. I just found on the verizon site a fios internett optimizer. I ran it, restarted my computer, and now my download speed are normaly around 600kbs-1.5mbs!!! I am so happy. I never thought a small optimizing utility would actually work!

It is rather misleading the way they advertise it though. 1 mb broadband actually gives wou 128kb/sec maximum, which doesn't make much immediate sense to the average consumer.
Fortunately we now have 100% broadband coverage in Northern Ireland. It's keeps getting faster for the same price as well, up to 8mb now, so I get speeds up to 800kb/sec.
It's rather useless really, since virtually no server I'm downlaoding from can serve at that speed anyway, so I'm usually stuck at their level.

Majority of the website in the US are about 600kb/s, but that is roughly my max as well so I would know if any are higher than that or not.
With one exception, I beleive prospector stated about 1mb/s for downloading from newtek.

I was just picking random large doownloads on downloads.com, and i most of them ran at around 600-700kb/s but I did get a couple that ran at over 1mb/s. I get 1.3mb/s here on the newtek site. Life is just got a little better.

lol, sorry, I am just so happy. I have been stuck with dial-up all my life so I know what it feels like.

Yep, I know what you mean. I felt the same way when I switched to cable. Now if I could only get them to up the speed. Which apparently they are reserving for businesses.
