See if you can tell the difference between CG and a Photograph.

Fake or Photo? (http://www.autodesk.com/eng/etc/fakeorfoto/quiz.html)

I got 7 of 10. NewTek needs to make one.

10 out of 10 on my first go (seriously) :D

I'll tell you how I guessed each one. To avoid spoilage, highlight the section below to see...

1. BMW:[CG] Really good work, but the number plate looked off to me. As did the setting. if you were going to take a picture of a car, that's quite an od place to do it. But mainly it was the number plate.

2. Coffee: [CG] The spoon didnt look right and the cup looked far to clean and pristine, even for a new cup. Also, the surrounding and table were just too plain.

3. Corkscerw: [real] Again, it was the environment (the table) that made me think this was real.

4. Diamonds: [CG] Again the table was too perfect. Usually diamonds are laid out on cloth, but I saw no 'furryness' or ripples if it was cloth. The diamonds lighing/reflection/refraction didn't look right. They loko far too dark, so I suspect either a very dark reflection map or not one at all. Also, its just the kind of thing to try and do in CG.

5. Bolt: [real] Surface detail and dof were the best I've ever seen if it was CG. Which it isnt

6. Whisk: [CG] environment too plain and stretches off too far into the distance without any appriciable variation. I can also see in the reflections that just a black background was used for tracing the reflections. If it were real there would've been a room there with lighting and a photographer at least.

7. Rear of car: [real] Just looked far too convincing to not be real. Slightly out of focus and grainy with nice looking reflections of an environment that matches the lighting

8. Wooden monkies: [CG] Environment and textures were too plain and image too crisp

9. No idea: [real] guessed that no one would really want a realistic cg image of something not instantly recognisable :)

10. Peppers: [real] too much variation in the shape of the objects and, again, grainyness and focus.

Six here also...it`s not that easy.
If Chuck beats that, Im not surprised :)

8 out of 10. Some of them are almost cheating though. I mean, something as simple as a corkscew is so easy to fake with CG, it's hardly a fair question, it comes down to guesswork really, it could equally be real or CG. More complex scenes are easy to tell apart.

Ah! Did you get the four bonus ones right? Where's the smug icon?:)

I remember doing the original some time ago, when I scored perfectly.

I didn't do so well this round. 7/10

10 for 10, and 4 for 4.

I wouldn't have posted this at all, but I just had to let everyone know I did better than oDDity. So there.
Hey, oDDity? Can you tell if my icon is real? Or is that not a fair question?

(jeez, I'm all "jerk-store" today. My bad...)

7/10 as well. I seem to recall getting them all right on the original so it looks like cg is getting better.. or I'm getting worse.

Nice observations anti..

Just did the bonus round 4/4. That was a lot easier than the standard.

10 of 10, 4 of 4 bonus. Its pretty easy to tell when you look for things like dust and very small scratches on the surface. Thats what gives them all away.

9/10 for me. I think I rushed it with the diamond. On the original I got 10/10 and 4/4.

They were very careful in the photos they chose. The limited range of tones in the corkscrew pic - it was a photo that looks like 3D. The bolt pic was lousy as is the Bell Pepper one. The color is so limited - it looks almost like levels, grain, convert to 256, convert back to 24bit and its blown out too. They are trying to make the real photos seem to have defects (wrong color, limited color space, lighting errors, etc.) to confuse the whole thing.
As for the 3D stuff, the monkeys and the coffee cup are terrible. They look rendered from the git-go.
Well, just my $.02.

Angier

PS: Most of you guys do better than that in your sleep.

Yes, but since you can re-try as many times as you like, and can work it out by a simple process of elimination, anyone can get ten out of ten, if they're petty and smallminded enough to spend the time on it. Well done.

They can be faked, but obviously none of the 3d artitsts who made these examples took the time to add imperfections.

oDDity
07-22-2006, 12:08 PM
Yes, but you didn't know that. Some of the photos which do have small scratches and dust could have been well faked CG.
In fact it would be an intersting challege to do some of those and see if you can actually fake it perfectly, small scratches and dust included.

Andyjaggy

9 out of 10 here. The cork screw got me. I went back and took the bonus challenge and got 3 out of 4. What is it about that guy that doesn't look real? I mean it is an amazingly real character but there is still some small thing about it that told me it was CG, I just can't put my finger on it though.

Andyjaggy
07-22-2006, 12:25 PM
Oh by the way there is a link up in the left hand corner where you can take the original fake of foto challenge.

But i did know it, simply by looking at the picture and noticing there were no small imperfections. When i look at the photos, that's one of the first things i look for, are there imperfections...when i see them, that gives me strong reason to believe that it's a photo and not cg, simply because most people don't take the time to add all those minute details...me included. I'm not saying all photos will have glaring imperfections, i've seen many photos that look cg, lots of them are studio type setups. I think it would be very fun and interesting to fake a 3d render that looks like a photo, that's one of the things that got me interested in 3d to begin with, i might give it a try on a simple object.

Cesar Montero did a beautiful example of a pushpin over on SpinQuad, right down to the mold lines on the plastic and the scratches on the spike.

http://www.spinquad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8666

By the end I thought he'd come pretty close to photoreal...

First try 10 for 10

Bonus round 3 for 4

Tricked by the lizard:grumpy:

They have chosen some interesting photos to try and trick you.

NewTek should try to make one. In fact they should have a contest for LightWave artist to try and make the most photo-real renders that could trick the eye.

And looking at these made me realize something… My computer screen is really dirty.:D

Same here. I think the first 10 were quite easy - and I also think that the lizard was cheating. Though I have to admit, that I had seen that last bonus image earlier on CgTalk, so it was quite easy too... ;)

Rayek
07-24-2006, 03:40 PM
All of them right. Imperfections and lighting gave'm away pretty quick. Even the cork screw is quite obvious once you check the surface properties. And those hdr-backgrounds are just not very well chosen. I mean, the diamonds are reflecting some kind of outside exterior...

About the cg-guy: people just know when something's off with cg-faces. As far as I know, nobody's been able to explain in a precise way why cg-faces do not compare favourably to real faces. It's pretty much vague stuff like "the eyes are wrong", or "the skin texture isn't believable".

Anyone here know of a 3d render that shows a truly realistic & photographically believable face?

TheDAve
07-24-2006, 04:02 PM
First time 10/10 then 4/4 on the bonus.
Many were gut instinct though I couldn't be sure I'd get the same if I tried again in another week.

As far as the CG guys face goes - since there are bumps or pocks on the skin usually there would be a darkening of the skin. Acne, cuts, stitches, etc, won't change the texture of the skin without also altering the color. Whitening for scars... etc.

Also, the hair on his little CG head is almost too perfect. Look at the perfectly lined up hair on his forehead. Did the guy bring a comb to Camelot?

Captain Obvious
07-26-2006, 02:51 PM
10/10 + 4/4, but technically, this was my second try; I've done this test before. Then again, I got the same score the first time... Anyway, there's always something that gives it away as CG. I've been fooled a couple of times, I must admit, but I tend to have a good eye for CG vs real.

And the face in the bonus round is TOO easy after having seen it all over CG Society. ;)

10/10 and 4/4.
Most CG is given away by lack of detail and most real are given away by oddities that could be easily fixed in CG. Some have the wrong orientation(look unbalanced) or interact oddly with the surface they are on.

DonS
07-26-2006, 09:34 PM
9/10, 4/4. Couldn't figure out what the pic was that turned out to be the trunk lid of a car...called it CG as a guess. The CG guy almost had me...I usually look at the eyes first and they looked pretty good...and the skin details looked convincing, too. But something about the skin coloring and translucency didn't seem right...like he was wearing makeup, but the makeup wasn't real (if that makes any sense). In the end, though, it was the forehead/hairline that made me click the CG button.

D.

first go 6 out a 10 as i just looked at the tumbnails not the larger ones! [doh!]
i had another go with larger piks and got 10 out a 10...second time round though!

the bonus round i got 4 outa 4

the face looks like a wax dummy not a live human..if they said which is a wax dummy or a cg face..i'd a have to guess but no way does it look as though a living breathing person had their photo taken..

My GF got 10 out of 10 on this test, and 4 out of 4 on the bonus round. She's not into CG or anything, but being a photographer, she knew which were possible with film ;)

My score sucked somewhat more :) 8/10 and 3/4 but hey, at least i didnt miss any obvious ones :)

BTW: I want that painted lizard in my living room :)
