If you are talking about 3D Paint, then Modo and Bodypaint work well with Lightwave and paint directly onto objects.

If you mean 2D Paint, and well everyone uses Photoshop or a similar free alternative paint program.

Sorry, yes 3D paint. Bodypaint looks good but so does zbrush for the money. Thanks for your help.

Zbrush is a wonderful program!!! Though my use of it has remained relatively limited, I've gotten beautiful results with it. Highly recommended. However, I must admit, that the UI is really cumbersome and not really efficient in a 3d workflow. Any thoughts on this by others?

If you want to go the cheaper route I recommend Corel Paint Shop Pro. It costs much less than Photoshop and can do almost all the same stuff. I still paint my textures the old school way then map them onto my object.

I'd concider ZB, as you get 3D modeling features as well. Supposedly the upgrade to ZB 2.5 is free, but its been 2 years since they promissed the upgrade so I'm not so sure anymore. ZB can feel a bit clumsy to use, the main problem I had in the begining was getting around the Ctrl / Shift / Alt shortcuts. It is the most complicated combination sets of shortcuts I've experienced. One thing I miss is the ability to zoom in on an area like in Lightwave, but who knows, I've used the prog only like 6 times or so, so maybe the function is burried in the program somewhere. One problem with textures are that they can become blurry/loose quality. (Here is a link on that (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=27680)) The price is not too bad, $415, so I'd definetly keep this as an option. Or maybe Tattoo (http://www.terabit.nildram.co.uk/tattoo/index.htm), a $40 app. (haven't tried other 3D paint apps)

Cool, a solution on the Blurry Texturemap problem in ZB posted today. :)
