View Full Version : LW9 Modeler compared to V8's Modeler

My prime useage of LW is using it as a modeler so I'd be interested in people's feedback on what benefits version 9 has brought.

For example v8's lack of edge modeling tools always had me switching into Silo or Hexegon for certain tasks.

Is it worth upgrading for the modeler alone?

I'd be grateful for insights and opinions from members on this topic.

I love modeller in V9. I love edges, especially with the edgetools plug ins from James Wilmot.
Having edge selection and manipulation has helped me hugely.
I think edges alone make the upgrade worth it. Add to that setting up your surfacing with nodes and a host of other tools and you have a kick a** modeller.

For what it's worth, a link to the EdgePack tools for LW9.0:

Thanks for the feeback, limited as it was - I'm guessing from that that an upgrade is not worth it.

If you only model (no surfacing or rendering), consider purchasing LWCAD2.0 (http://www.wtools3d.com/).

If you want superior surfacing, rendering and cameras to show off your models, consider LW9.0.

Don't forget that NT has stated several times that Layout was the main focus of the 9.0 work - they're going to be digging into and upgrading Modeler throughout the 9.x lifecycle. So, even if having edges isn't enough to open your wallet yet, there's changes a-comin'!

Celshader, thanks for that.
Maxx - that's good to know, I did not realise this was the situation.

Celshader, thanks for that.

Glad to help. :) For what it's worth, another commercial plug-in that LightWave modelers praise is VertiBevel2.0 (http://skstudios.com/). I already own LWCAD2.0, but I'm thinking of purchasing VertiBevel2.0 sometime in the future, too.

VertiBevel 2.0 is great, just waiting for them to update the installer to work with LW9. It says 'Coming soon..' on the website and I sure hope it will be soon. :D
