View Full Version : rail clone oddity

I'm trying to clone a simple object around a closed curve. When I use rail clone with the oriented option, each cloned object is rotated properly around the curve but the objects are not in the same plane as the curve. When I turn off the oriented option, the clones are in the same plane as the curve but are not rotated! :cursin:

Attached is a pic of the result of rail clone with oriented.

Any ideas?

The rail clone takes into account the rotation of the curve (which you can't influence - as far as i know). It will help if the start object is on the curve, so it doesn't change the plane where it is cloned.
If you need more clone functionality Pictrix's C_Clone may help (great plugin, not the only one and affordable).http://www.pictrix.jp/lw/Cclone_mp/index.html

How about centering the cloned object? It might be rotating it around the pivot, rather than the center of the object. Centering it makes the center the pivot :)

Thanks for the tip but centering didn't seem to make a difference:cry:

I'm a little worried about the documentation for the C_Clone. I'm having a hard time understanding that webpage. I'll poke around some more and see if it does what I want it to. Thanks!

When you select your rail, there should be a yellow diamond marker indicating the start vertex. If you centre your object on that diamond, then it should clone in a predictable manner.

Check out C_1stContact by Pictrix (http://www.pictrix.jp/lw/index_2.html)- it'll align and rotate the start object to first point of a background curve, making Bog's sugesstion much easier to deal with.

I did a little screen grab with c_clone:
http://www.bam-3d.com/LW/c_clone.mov
the ring is colored light at the top and dark at the bottom, so you can see it's rotating around the curve as expected.
C_Clone has a lot of functions and is a VERY usefull replacement of LW's rail clone.
I hope this helps.

Hey gang,

I downloaded C_1stContact and used it to center my object on the BG rail and this appears to have worked!

Thanks a lot to everyone that helped.
