View Full Version : How do I explode an object (polygon explosion)?

I am trying to explode an object in Lightwave, lets say for example it's a cube (it's actually very similar to a cube, but it's a 3D logo with segments cut out).

How do I explode it so it bursts into lots of little pieces? It is made up of many tripled polygons already.

Any help would make my day! :)

Hi there,

There's a million ways to do it. The best one would be to use SG Explosion (Displacement plugin). This will create real volume chunks of your objects. There is also a Modeler script called FI's CrackIt! that will make such objects. Look both plugins up at http://www.flay.com . Another way would be to simply use displacement textures, animated polygon size and lots of triangles. Yet another way would be using real particles that come out of your object and then dissolve out the objects so just the particles remain.

thanks for the ideas, greatly appreciated.

Since posting this, I tried using the displacement map and polygon size, but I realised that for this project it isn't going to work.

The problem is that I am exporting to the Swift 3D LW II plugin, as it is for a flash movie online.

Polygon size doesn't appear to work with it, and particles obviously don't get exported with the plugin.

Nevermind, I shall endeavour to try new techiniques, I fear the only one may be to actually animate each part seperately, really trying to avoid that though.

well, the hard way to do it (ive doone it) is to just break it up into lots of different layers, then blow them up separatly in the layout. It works OK but is very time intensive to model. I use 30+ layers to blow up a small ship!

If you have a couple of hundred dollars you might look into "flicker", a program at "thirdwishsoftware.com".

It makes the vector conversions for flash but doesn't rely on triangles or anything because it is a post processing plugin.

I have the swift plugin and that's one thing that frustrates me to no end.

I haven't used Flicker yet but it looks very promising. It works with Sub-Ds, particle effects, image maps, you name it.

It will at least let you explore more options.
