Any help appreciated

Sounds like a problem with your video card or video drivers.

could be a clasic overheating problem.

Check to make sure your video card has proper ventilation. If its
a 'higher end' card with heat sincs and fans on the card itself
also check and clean them out (you'd probably be amazed at how much crap seems to wind up Inside your computer!) clean the case fans out too, etc.
this is all the more important as were heading into summer
now (or atleast we are here in boston ... almost ... kinda ...).

second to that, possibly check which driver versions you might be using. If you had a bad crash sometime before this happened and your running Windows XP, its possible an older, stored video driver may have replaced a newer one (god it took me so long to discover that!)
