Hi friends... I'm doing a car crash scene and need to have some skid marks follow through the crash...I used to use the old plug-in 'surface effectors' wich used nulls and ?? not sure how it worked, but it worked very well... now version 8.5 can't use that plug-in... anyone created this effect recently in LW8 or better? thanks for any help

you could use hypervoxels and a particle emmiter throwing out particles at the base of the tyre and the particle's set to 'stick'

I set that up before submitting this post, the particles seem to always have a 'volume' and therefore tend to be lumpy on the road surface...will sprites lay down flat? this si where I was headed, just thought there was another way with nulls and gradients?? this animation below used surface efferctors...was easier then, thanks for your reply.

maybe an animated clip map would work on a poly with just the skid texture on it.

Hi There,

You could get Steve Worleys "Polk" collection which has the "ACID" shader plugin which does what Prems "surface effectors" does or did.

Also issue 53 of 3D World mag has the HV Sprite method as a tutorial.

Could always animate a texture in After Effects and slap it on the road surface.

As 9 has got Relativity built in, can we hope for Surface Effectors back as well? I'm sure it's do-able with nodes. But I'm sure of that because the node editor makes me realise just how much I don't know.

Thanks for these rplies... Animating a texture is a tough road for this... mapping a texture to the precise motions of a violent impact with 3 vehicles different vehicles...I had passed on that idea eaely on...but thanks!

Hi There Burvis,

I made this for you from the 3d world tut

Hope it's what you are looking for!

I have set this up quickly so forgive the basicness of it and I also fixed the start frame of the particles but if you want them to fade in you can envelope the birthrate or (I think) the dissolve of your HV Sprites where the skid should start.

The problem with sprites is that they dont lay down flat but face the camera. If you make them small enough they can work sometimes. Heres another plugin that might work along the same vein as surface effectors:
http://perso.orange.fr/dpont/plugins/ParticlePaint.html
or
http://perso.orange.fr/dpont/plugins/MarkerPen.html

Wouldn't the 'Markpen' plugin allow you to do this?

you can always render really flat Volumes instead of Sprites ;)
but ya, Denis' plugins are the way to go!
