View Full Version : Help Help Parenter is Misbehaving !!

Hello everybody

i have a simple scene where i want my character to walk on with a TV and

set it down simple enough, but im having trouble when it comes to parenting

the TV to my characters hands then unparenting them.

Every time i position the TV where i want it in my characters Hands, i use

Parenter to parent it temporarily to the character then i would unparent the

TV to have it rest on the floor.

Now parent in place is ON, when i activate parenter, and select one of my

characters wrist bones to be the temporary parent the TV object Jumps

when it shouldnt. Im at a loss as to why this is happening.

Just to note im using Sasquatch and proxy pick, i dont think these would

effect the parenter plugin but i dont know

if anybody could shed some light on this then that would be great

Are the arms IK'd?

Yes the arms are IK'd and the Feet aswell

does this effect it ?

Hi again

ok i did a little test i just converted skelegons into bones, and tried parenter

on the TV again and it still doesnt work !

any other thoughts

Actually it shouldn't.. Not if you're parenting to the hips and if they are not controlled by IK or modifiers it should work..

I don't know why it should be acting up- apart from that it is a bit twitchy..
The best thing to do is to set a simple scene with a few nulls and try and replicate the problem.
Try parenting it on a different frame.

just to add the TV doesnt move even when parenter has parented it !

the strangest thing parenter is working fine

on basic null items, in other scenes, i cant understand this at all, it just

doesnt work with my current scene

help help help ! ! !

i tested the null version in the same scene as my cave man scene and it has

worked for those null items but its not working for my TV object

can anybody help ?

ok have made some progress with this unusual problem,

i have discovered that it is the TV object itself.

did a simple test of it moving towards a null spins round it then moves away

and when i parented it it jumps off pivot (dont ask me why)

so i re modeled the tv and presto it works fine, really weired though i didnt

think that how an object is modeled would effect it !

Hi again

Aaaarrrrgggghh Parenter is playing up again, i want a my character this time

to pick up a club off the floor but the club keeps jumping every time i use


Just to note the arms are IK

If anybody has any suggestions as to why this happens or how to sort it

that would be great

well if i post a pic it wont really describe the problem,

whats happening is that i have a caveman man club object, which my

caveman man has to pick up at frame 155, so i decided to use Parenter for

this action but every time i choose the Left Hand Goal ( Arms are IK'd )

the club emidiately jumps to a different position instead of being fixed to

where i wont it, parent in place is on and there are no other motion modifiers

active, it just wont stay put !

Ok you convinced me here are two pictures of the problem

If you can help then that would be great,

I have acheived what i wont via the old method of the two object dissolve

trick but it would be nice to identify this problem for future reference !!

Thanks Andy, but I can't really tell from the pics . I understand what the problem is but i'd need to fiddle about with your settings to find out exactly what's causing it..

Andy I would also consider have two versions of the club, one always in his hand and the other on the floor. Have on dissolved out and the other visible. At the frame where he picks up the other club switch the visibility. Its simple to do and works. Ive seen the same method used in other apps because its a simple solution. :)

I've used the "two objects with animated visibility one parented to animated object, one in the final resting place" approach and it works fine, which is why I've never bothered with parenter......

I have this same exact problem. As soon as you enable Parenter, things start jumping around for some reason.

Parenter works fine in some scenes and then in others it's worthless.

I think it may have something to do with moving the pivot point in Layout (after it's been set in Modeler).

But I'm at a loss.
