Looking for ideas on making a Tumbleweed.Detail at 20 to 40 feet.

Paint a texture on a sphere of the branches of the tumble weed. make the rest of the texture transparent with an alpha channel. then copy that sphere and scale it down inside of the first one and rotate it on the axis of where the root is so that the textures of each sphere are not lined up. copy, scale down and rotate a few more spheres to fill up the tumble weed to look thick. then add a slight displacement texture so that the sphere doesn't look so perfect. you may need separate displacement maps per sphere to get it to look right. i use a techniqe like this on a cows tail and it looked really good.

Just off the top of my head, I'm thinking about a multifaceted sphere type. Using some texturing to get that type of look.
