I've seen a few animated shorts over the years, but not nearly as many as I'd like to. What are your favorites or what are some you'd suggest seeing?

Currently, the best CG short I've ever seen is one from Poland called Fallen Art. A little weird but exceptionally done. Characters were even created with LW.

My personal fave is

Fifty Percent Grey by Ruari Robinson... VERY nice style and superb sound design and animation, topped off with such a simple but thought provoking storyline. Shame it didn't beat "For the Birds" at Oscar time, in my opinion it should have.

Whoops, forgot to post the link...

here ya go http://www.ruairirobinson.com/fiftypercentgrey.htm

lardbros, thanks for your suggestion. I saw that film back in '03 and haven't, for the life of me, been able to recall its name. I'm thrilled to know the name and where to locate it. Many thanks indeed.:)

Those Blur films are terrific!

No probs at all. Glad i could help someone! Nothing more annoying than having seen a brilliant short film and not knowing what it was!

Agreed, Blur is amazing!

There's another favorite of mine that I've simply not been able to find anywhere in recent years: Maaz, by Christian Volckman. A French film, it's a combination of live action, weird CG animation, and some odd music. Almost dance like in it's qualities, but harkens to stage work as well.

Cool thread, I'll be checking these other posts out tonight! Thanks everyone!

For the birds, I can remember being at the Electronic Theater at SIGGRAPH and all the people around screaming and laughing.

When I downloaded this one the file did not play properly - black blank picture and weird audio buzzing. Anybody help with this problem.

Thanks.

Edit: Tried another download and all is fine. Must've gotten corupted somehow the first time.

Just watched 'Prey Alone'.

Awesome film, well written, and what a twist!

Just worked out what the title means too.

Prey Alone is definitely an interesting and very well done piece. Great suggestion, fyborg.

Actually went to the creators site (jonny3d.com) and checked out some info there. Most of the project was animated in 3DS and composited in AE, with a completion time of 3 months. Quite impressive, indeed.

Thanks to everyone who has posted films. All terrific recommendations.

'Theros' - a really short film that plays like a music video on speed that touches on the idea of modernization and its consequences through simplistic imagery, but quite a visceral experience -- I thought it was brilliant.

BBC Article on 'Theros' (http://www.bbc.co.uk/hampshire/content/articles/2006/03/08/bigscreen_theros_feature.shtml) (Only link I could find, but I think you can find it over at cgtalk.com.)

'F8' by Jason Wen. ~12 minutes of science-fiction mind-bending extravaganza -- ala' Blade Runner (visually speaking).

F8 CG-Short Home Site (http://www.f8movie.com/f8index.html)

'The Killer Bean: Episode 2 - The Party' by Jeff Lew - Just because it was hillarious to watch! First CG short I saw that hooked me into CG as a filmmaking medium.

Killer Bean Site (http://http://www.jefflew.com/news.html)

Cheers.

Oh... just remembered another one of my faves:

It's called "Delivery". Some of the character animation (the hands) looks ropey, but the story and idea behind it are really nice and intriguing. The music sends shivers down my spine too, absolutely brilliant!
