Hi I'm very very new to LW. How would I go about changing the normals on varies polygons within an object. For example lets say I made a sphere I want have to half of it be flat shaded and the other half be smooth shaded. In Maya I used to just select the faces(polygons) of half the sphere then hit normals>set to face then I'd select the other half and hit smooth shade all. But when I select half the polygons in LW and go to the surface editor...the entire sphere changes shading not just what I select. How do I control the normals the way I want to?

First you need to give one half of the sphere a name this allows lightwave to know what polygons you are refering to.
Select 1/2 of the sphere, press q type in a name, then open the surface editor and select that name you created, then select smoothing.
