hi everyone.

i don't do a lot of 3D work, but i do now and then, and right now i'm trying to get advice on modeling photoreal buildings.

these would be film resolution, not for games so a 6 sided box with a texture map isn't what i'm after.

i would like to know of any tutorials, or advice that exisats.

I boolean and smoothshift my way through buildings.
Two books come to mind - Lightwave 3D Applied 5.6 had a great introduction to booleans with a Castle model, you can apply those techniques to just about any building you want to create.

Also check out Dan Ablans Inside LightWave books, he did a schoolhouse in LW6 and an apartment or office tower in LW7.

Key advice here though - spend time doing at least a basic storyboard. There is no sense in modeling what can't be seen by the camera. Think Hollywood sets.

For the distant buildings, you may find that cubes with texture maps are just fine... for medium shots, the same cube but with roof details or entrances defined as needed.

one of the best tips I always remember is to look!

buildings are all around us, look very closely at how light, shade are effected by different structures, shapes, materials.
