I need to composite live action with cg elements, does anyone knows an affordable solution for camera matching and motion tracking?

Depends what you mean by affordable. I use syntheyes. www.ssontech.com works a treat. Here are the only two tests I have done

The other 'affordable' solution is PFHoe from The Pixel Farm

http://www.thepixelfarm.co.uk/contentfull.aspx?content=pfhoe.htm

It costs a whole 49 ($88). And if you need to run at a higher res (PFHoe is DV-res only) then PFMatch (449) is the next best thing. The full-on 'pro' version PFTrack is 3,000.

Exports camera data to LW which loads as a scene file containing the keyframed camera animation. Open it up and away you go...

I went for SynthEyes because PFhoe was so bad. It was next to no flexibility cmpaired to SE. However, have not tried PFMatch (I think it used to be more expensive and only for use with Shake), but that is comparible in price to SE.

I recommend SynthEyes as well. It gives you loads of manual options if the automatic tracking fails... and those manual options are well thought out as well. I used it in two feature films so far (once head to head againast BouJou and PFTrack) and SE performed just as well in comparison.
I just think it has hands down the best price/performance ratio of anything out there...
Cheers,
Mike

Another vote for SynthEyes. We're getting excellent results.

By popular choice, sytheyes wins!

I'll grab the demo for a test drive before we buy it, but judging by the number of votes (and the prestige of the recommendants) we're going to buy it for shure.

Thank you guys:thumbsup:

Hey royL,

How is syntheyes working for you so far? I've been thinking about purchasing it for a while now, but have been waiting to hear more user feedback.

I'm glad you didn't go with PF... the results I've seen are not that good, and besides... I'm still bitter at them for buying out the Icarus project and thereby getting rid of a good, FREE, tracking solution....

ditto on syntheyes! used it with great success, and I didn't even know what I was doing. it's not too hard to pick up. It's cheap, too! It UI is sparse, but the features work.
