View Full Version : KrabbitSoft Studios releases KWL Open Beta v 0.69

04-18-2006, 01:33 PM

Haven't posted here in awhile, been pretty busy working on KWL.
We've just released KrabbitWorld Labyrinth Open Beta v 0 .69 and are pretty excited with it's consistent improvement.

This version includes the early rpg elements recently implemented.

All models and objects (excluding bsp) were created and animated using lightwave.
Main character models are between 2000 and 3000 polys, by the way. :)

Little promo poster here. :D

There is an indepth post about features, system specs, download links etc. over at Gamedev.net. (http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=387910)

edit: there is a graphic anomaly regarding fog rendering, in some areas, with ati cards on a mac. (some distracting flashing where fog meets bsp walls)
ATI is working on the issue.

thanks, Lamont!

Did you have a go at it yet?

It's fun to have reached the point where our friends and colleagues can actually be entertained with this little demo for a whole couple of hours. :D

Moving is really difficult, and the camera is too close. Tell me where to go to get to the action ^_^!

Town loading is a little choppy at first due to loading of a whole lot of npcs.
But once they are loaded it speeds up. Next release we'll tighten that up a bit.
Its only the town and only at the beginning where it is a bit slow.
The combat levels are very fast.

Controls are very simple and instinctive.

Simply zoom in and out with the mouse wheel.

There is a help file easily accessed by the question mark icon on the icon action bar at the the bottom of the screen.
Controls are all laid out in the help screen too.

Clicking on the Closet of Holding brings up a map.
Click on a selection on the list on the left, then on the closet on the map.
You are instantly transported to that location.

If you choose to go to Karrelica Portal Centre you can pick a difficulty level there.
Anything from Kare Bear easy to Khaos Really tough.

Anyway, the action (kombat) comes up pretty quick once you go through one of the portals.

This game works even with a 32 meg video card.

What are your system specs?

System specs:

4GB Ram
3.4GHZ P4
256MB GF 6800GT

lol, you should have no problem with that.

- did you figure out how to move?
- did you read the help file on movement and camera controls?
- did you use the closet of holding (which is right behind you on loading the game) to travel to the combat levels?

I recommend pressing the 'Weapon' text button and holding down the mouse when you are on the character creation/selection screen. The krabbit will cycle through the combat animations. Its very very kool. :)

lol.. in between working, I often google krabbitworld to see who new has picked us up.

Since mmorpgdot has found us their news feed delivers us far and wide.

This morning's chuckle was a post on a Russian games forum. So funny.
The guy was so mad he posted 3 mad smilies and was swearing how he couldn't get to lvl 21.

That tells me several things.
- he was totally immersed in the gameplay
- he forgot it was beta/demo with a level cap at lvl 20
- he wanted more

That is a testament to the ease of controls. :D

quick update:

- based on your feedback, Lamont, we are putting in 'loading npc' messages so the player can know the progress state. :)

I just did a full wipe of my comp :) I have to re-install.

Hard crash..needed to CTRL_ALT_DEL to get out.
no error, but locked mouse.
Was fighting technoskeletons, up against the wall, did a jump and back move, went INTO wall and froze. Was between the wall and Left Ramp looking into area with technoskeletons.

Stayed out of there second time and just went walking around.
Can go thru many things? Normal?

@ prospector:

Left Ramp.. not certain where you are.

If you could take a screenshot, I may be able to verify and correct the problem.

Thank you for the feedback. :)

ps. crashes are rare, as far as we know, and many hours of gameplay can be enjoyed in the demo.

Maaaad...Been waitinf to see how this came out.

Turbo what sort of engine did you use? and how much programming experience do you need for it?

05-03-2006, 11:44 PM
It isn't the engine we started with (an extensive amount of programming was required) so I couldn't make any reccommendations.

Good news is we're aiming for a May commercial soft-launch. :D
Once that's out we'll add more characters, content and levels.
