I wouldn't count on it... Why not use LightWave?

You could do flames inside a person with every of the major 3D applications but for a beginner i would say houdini isnt the right stuff because its much harder to learn and use then lightwave .

Houdini is known for having one of the best particle effect engines. It is also a little more difficult to learn [a steep 85 degree learning curve, compared to other 3d packages], as it has a more procedual way of doing things. It is usually only used by TDs. You can do what you are looking for in Lightwave and any other program.

We are not saying you are, we are just saying you cant have a magic button to make the effect for you. As it takes time to build up to that skill level.

Can you show us a link of what effect you are trying to match?

Also if you want Houdini so much do some research and go over to Non-Commercial Houdini Apprentice CDROM set download (http://www.vislab.usyd.edu.au/sidefx/). It took me all of 2 seconds to find this link from Sidefx's website. Download the second CD also to get tutorials and such. I would recomend you download 5.5.x as version 6.x is a early release and is a trial. For more tutorals goto 3dbuzz.com I think is the site name.

I don't know. I usually only visit LWG3D (http://www.lwg3d.com/) and these forums and if you want 1000+ tutorials ranging from basic modeling to particles in Lightwave you can go to Lightwave Tutorials on the Web (http://members.shaw.ca/lightwavetutorials/Main_Menu.htm)

Also do you have that picture that you said that you like to mimic the flames?

Oh and one other thing. Newtek has a few tutorils that List how to do flames on their site. Basic Fire to start from #1 (http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/tutorials/specialfx/volumetric_fire/volumetric_fire.html) and Basic Fire Start Kit #2 (http://users.otenet.gr/~nixx/flame_tutorial.htm). The second one will show you how to make a logo with fire. You can do the same thing for the fire in the person spreading about. These are just starters, so you will have to build off of them to get what you want.

Houdini was used for the vampire disintegration effects in BLADE 2. not quite flames, but pretty impressive.
