Hello. I am very new to all this 3d animation stuff. I've mainly worked with video and print graphics. I need to know if Lightwave is right for me.

I need to creat a globe that is spinning... with stars flying by and a galaxy in the background, with a logo spinning around the globe.

Any help ya'll could give me would be appreciated.

Welcome to the community. Spinning a globe is a snap. Just set 2 keyframes, the last keyframe you rotate your globe before setting. If autokey is turn on, just make sure you move the timline to where you want the globe to stop spinning, rotate your globe and your done.
Stars can be made a few different ways, probably the fastest is in modeler, you will find a star sphere tool, this will create a ball of points. Then in layout, you can set the luminosity of those points.(remember this is only one way to do this :hey: )
For your galaxy, load a image into the background, or better yet onto a flat box, which can them be moved.
As for your logo, check out the spline guide tool in modeler, this will take text and use some of the points of your globe as a background guide to bend the text.
I know I am throwing a lot at you, so feel free to ask questions as you go. If I don't answer I know someone will. There are a lot of excellent people roaming this forum.
Below is a database for beginners.
I hope this helps

Flay is a web site where you can search other web sites for plugins. If you need a plugin for Lightwave this is the very first place to check. The address is www.flay.com

great... basically what i was needing to know is if Lightwave could do this. Now can it export in a file format that i can use. I tryed some trial versions of other program but they wouldn't export in something i could use like a .mov file. All they would do is export to XML or GLD or something like that.

Yep it will export animations as a sequence in a variety of formats like bmp, tga, tif, psd, jpg. It will also export as a video file using either avi or mov. What is usually recommended to new users is to export your animation as a sequence. Then should anything happen while you are rendering such as the power goes out, you can start rendering at the last frame that was being rendered. The reason for this, is because avi and mov formats require that you start again at the beginning. Which is no fun, when your animation takes several hours or days to render. Yes I did say days, Lightwave can render a full length video if you wanted it to.

Actually, I probably should do some correcting. Exporting is normally a term used when saving the mesh data to be used in another program that can handle 3d meshes. Lightwave can export to obj and 3ds as well as it own lwo5 format. The file formats I listed in the previous posts are rendered images that are saved rather than exported. I know its not such a big deal, but it could be confusing when looking over several different programs. Also the list for sequence formats is incomplete, its just an example of some of the formats you can save to. I hope I didn't confuse you any.:stumped: LOL
Good luck and have fun

Ok. Im working with Final Cut studio and motion 2. I do promotional video editing. http://www.musicmediagraphics.com. But like i said i'm new to 3d. So i need a way to export out of a 3d program to a file like .mov where i can drop it on a timeline in Final Cut. Intros, 3d logos.... stuff like that.

Mov format is no problem, you can even access the codecs for quicktime.
